Every May 22, is usually marked as Bitcoin Pizza day.

Why?

You want to ask.

I was curious as to why a day would be set aside and given such a name.

Well, these are what I found out about what has come to be one of the historic days in the history of cryptocurrency.

  1. On May 22nd 2010, Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoins. It marks when the first real-world good was bought with the first decentralized digital money (Bitcoin).
  2. As of that time, 10,000 BTC was worth just $41. Though getting data on the early Bitcoin economy is really hard to come by, according to Bitcoin user ender_X, Hanyecz could have traded his bitcoin in an exchange for U.S. dollars … about $41 to be exact.
  3. It took Four Days For Hanyecz to get his pizza delivered: Sure, it’s not as impressive as Satoshi who had to wait nearly 11 months for bitcoin to establish a price, but by conventional food delivery standards, Hanyecz waited a while for his order.
  4. Aside from Bitcoin Pizza Day, Bitcoiners have been creating several holidays for almost as long as the technology existed.

For example, “Satoshi Disappear Day.” Bitcoin users marked the disappearance of Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

Though Bitcoin Pizza Day occurred a bit earlier, it took some time for this day to be considered a holiday, most likely because the price had yet to really rise.

5. In case you don’t know what those now expensive pack of pizza looks like, Hanyecz posted a total of five pictures of his food, which appeared to have a variety of less than traditional toppings, including olives, jalapeños, whole tomatoes and more
